What does a surgeon look like? The #ILookLikeASurgeon campaign on Twitter, which was started in 2015 by surgical resident Heather Logghe, shows that women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ people can all look like surgeons. In this roundtable, panelists discuss the origins of the social media movement and where it is headed. Mara Antonoff of MD Anderson Cancer Center is joined by Shanda Blackmon of the Mayo Clinic, Katie Nason of UPMC Presbyterian, and Caitlin Harrington of Oregon Health and Science University. The panelists share their thoughts on how #ILookLikeASurgeon can be used to change public perceptions of who can be a surgeon, increase camaraderie amongst surgeons, and inspire future generations to pursue a career in surgery.
