• Sets up and operates heart-lung machine in operation theatre to take over functions of patient's heart and lungs during surgery i.e. checks for:-
• Power supply, all the sockets and connection to Heart Lung Machine and TCM.
• Medical Gases
• Battery of Heart Lung Machine.
• Demo run of Machine
• Reviews patient medical history and chart, and consults with surgeon or physician to obtain patient information needed to set up heart-lung machine and associated equipment.
• Selects, assembles, sets up, and tests heart-lung machine to ensure that machine and associated equipment are functioning according to specifications
• Operates heart-lung machine to regulate blood circulation and composition, to administer drugs and anesthetic agents, and to control body temperature and other parameters during surgery
• Monitors and observes operation of heart-lung machine and patient's physiologic variables such as blood temperature, blood composition, and flow rate, and adjusts equipment to maintain normal body functions
• Cleans and adjusts parts of heart-lung machine and disconnects it after use and ensures cleaning and sterilization.
• Maintains, assembles, and operates the cell saver in the operating rooms
• Provides intra-operative and follow-up heparin analysis for cardiac and other surgical procedures as required during heart surgery.
• Conducts quality assurance and safety checks and maintains perfusion equipment in coordination with biomedical engineering department such as: heart-lung machines, temperature control modules, intra-aortic balloon pumps, blood gas and electrolyte analyzers, heparin management systems, cell savers, and physiological monitoring devices. Equipment that is malfunctioning is reported to the Biomedical Engineering department.
• Maintains related patient records of the cardiopulmonary bypass surgical procedures.
• Possesses knowledge of infection control and waste management.
• Ensures updated knowledge of laid down procedures.
• Till date I have conducted perfusion more than 1500 open heart procedures.
• Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting(CABG),Complex congenital repairs and re-construction procedures
• Various valve surgeries with homografts, bioprosthetic and mechanical heart valves
• Bentall procedure, RA/LA myxomas excisions
• Aortic aneurysm and Aortic dissection cases[ascending, arch, descending (abdominal) aneurysms]
• Atrial Septal Defect(ASD),Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD)
• Correction of total/partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection, Fontan procedure
• Tetralogy of Fallot(TOF)
• Seining procedure, Arterial Switch operation(ASO)
• Truncus arterious repair, Rastelli procedure
• ALCAPA repair,Ebstein’s anomaly and others……
• Integrated ECMO assembling and in post ECMO support
• Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
• Intra-Aortic Balloon Counter pulsation
• Various techniques during CPB which includes Total Circulatory Arrest(TCA),Retrograde Cerebral Perfusion(RCP),Ante grade Cerebral Perfusion(ACP),Pre-Conventional and Modified Ultra Filtration, different techniques of Myocardial Protection, various gas management strategies like Ph stat and Alfa stat
