Alessandro Parolari
Research
A great part of the research activity of Alessandro Parolari has been devoted to the study of the biological effect of coronary surgical revascularization concerning bleeding, haemostasis, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial damage. In particular he has been interested by the role of surgical trauma and/or extracorporeal circulation on the activation of the haemostatic-thrombotic/inflammatory systems occurring during and persisting several weeks after coronary artery bypass. He could demonstrate that, when extracorporeal circulation is avoided (off-pump coronary surgery), the activation of the above mentioned parameters still occurs, but is slightly delayed with respect to the use of the extracorporeal circulation (on-pump). Moreover, he unequivocally demonstrated that the activation is protracted in the postoperative period for at least one month, independently from the revascularization strategy used. He has acquired expertise in the evaluation of data with the use of advanced statistical models. By the use of this methodology he has published a variety of meta-analysis on cardiac surgical outcomes, especially concerning different surgical techniques in coronary bypass surgery and in the treatment of left ventricular aneurysms. During his career as surgeon and researcher he recently turned his attention also on the aortic and mitral valve biology.
