Malawi is one of the countries with a high burden of cancer of the oesophagus. I hope to attain a skill which shall enable me to handle oesophageal surgeries competently. Besides, many people are referred abroad every year for cardiothoracic surgeries. This drains the already strained resources of the ministry of health. Setting up a cardiothoracic surgical unit will go a long way to prevent a number of deaths and reduce the expenses incurred by the government annually.
