  In the past I studied myocardial ischemia and reperfusion, and that has served me very well throughout my career.  Lately, I am focusing on blood conservation and protection from acute kidney injury.  This has made cardiopulmonary bypass safer, leading to extremely low rates of complications, as assessed by the STS database, and excellent patient outcomes.
