Stephan Schueler, MD, PhD

Prof. Stephan Schueler is a past president of ISHLT and of the ESCVS. He helped to set up both the Berlin Heart Centre, and a new centre in Dresden before moving to the Freeman Hospital, where he leads the Ventricular Assist Device Programme, which is the subject of this interview. Also shown are his implantation technique and an interview with one of his patients.

Stephan Schueler, MD, PhD

Professor Stephan Schueler was trained in Hanover. In 1981 he helped set up the Berlin Heart Centre. He then spent a year at Johns Hopkins where he received a PhD before spending 8 more years at the German Heart Centre in Berlin. He then went to the new Hospital in Dresden where he was the chairman and medical director of the Cardiovascular Institute. At the University Hospital in Dresden he became Professor of Cardiac Surgery.

After Dresden, Professor Schueler went to the Freeman Hospital in the UK as a consultant Cardiac and Transplant Surgeon. During his time at Freeman Hospital he was President of the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation (ISHLT), in 2002 and 2003.

He is an associate editor of the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, a section editor of current opinion in Organ Transplantation, and is on the editorial board of Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery (ICVTS). Professor Schueler has written more than 40 book chapters, and over 150 scientific papers. Most recently, he was president of the European Society for Cardiovascular Surgery (2007-8).

In this interview he talks about his experience with left ventricular assist device implantation. An insertion is shown as well as a discussion with a patient who has undergone LVAD insertion.
