One in Three Heart Surgeons Refuse Difficult Operations to Avoid Poor Mortality Ratings, Survey Shows
In his new book The Naked Surgeon: The Power and Peril of Transparency in Medicine, Samer Nashef of Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, UK reports that of the 115 specialists surveyed, 30% said that they had recommended non-surgical treatment to high risk patients to avoid a poor mortality rating.
It is sad. The interventional cardiologists are going to get better as heart surgeons get “worst”. Just by stepping out of the way, the worst option will be the only option. Eventually you will be no option.
