Think Aorta and Aortic Disease Awareness: An Interview With Gareth Owens and Dr. Ben Youdelman

In this inspiring interview, Cristina Ruiz Segria, CTSNet Senior Editor—Clinical Care Providers and nurse practitioner at James Cook University Hospital, UK, speaks with Dr. Ben Youdelman, Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery and Co-Director of the Maimonides Aortic Center in Brooklynn, NY, USA, and Gareth Owens, a former acute aortic dissection patient and leader of the Think Aorta campaign. They delve into the Think Aorta campaign in depth.

During the conversation, they discuss how Gareth and fellow survivors established the campaign in response to the lack of awareness surrounding the misdiagnosis of aortic conditions. They highlight the collaboration with organizations such as the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and The Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain & Ireland, which played a pivotal role in launching the campaign in 2018.

They also explore the campaign’s global expansion and its adoption worldwide. Additionally, they discuss the partnership with Dr. Youdelman and Carin Andersen, primary founder and President of the charity Aortic Hope, aimed at bringing the campaign to the United States.

The interview highlights the campaign’s success, notably the significant increase in the number of emergency aortic surgeries in the United Kingdom. However, the conversation also brings to light the challenges faced by the campaign, particularly in the United States.

Furthermore, they introduce the Think Family campaign, which emphasizes the importance of screening family members of patients with aortic disease due to its genetic component. The interview concludes with a discussion of future goals for the campaign, including the establishment of dedicated aortic centers and specific aortic call schedules in hospitals to streamline care for aortic disease patients.
